ELUM News Monrovia
Nearly three decades after its initial construction, the ELUM Radio broadcast tower in Monrovia has outlived its functional lifespan. Recognizing the urgent need for modernization, the Liberia Annual Conference (LAC) of the United Methodist Church (UMC), under the visionary leadership of Resident Bishop Samuel J. Quire Jr. of the Liberia Episcopal Area, has launched a critical reconstruction project. Supported by the United Methodist Communications (UMCom), the initiative aims to replace the aging structure with a state-of-the-art 200-foot tower, ensuring ELUM Radio’s continued role as a vital community resource.
The project, executed by NEON, a specialized engineering firm, promises a durable solution with a 50-year structural guarantee. Once completed, the upgraded tower will significantly enhance broadcast reliability and reach for the station, which serves as a key platform for education, spiritual outreach, and public information across Liberia.
In a show of steadfast commitment, Bishop Samuel J. Quire Jr. who also serves as President of the African Colleges of Bishops of the West Africa Central Conference made an unannounced visit to the construction site on Wednesday, January 28, 2025. Accompanied by Fth. Lewis Teah Togba Sr., Director of Communications for LAC UMC, Bishop Quire inspected the progress, including the installation of the tower’s final segments by NEON’s technical team, led by Manager Bro. John Jarbah.
“This project symbolizes our Church’s dedication to innovation and service,” remarked Bishop Quire during the tour. “ELUM Radio is not just a tower it is a beacon of hope, connecting communities with vital messages of faith and development.”
Fth. Togba Sr. provided detailed updates on the reconstruction, emphasizing the collaborative efforts between LAC UMC, UMCom, and NEON. He expressed gratitude for Bishop Quire’s hands-on leadership and UMCom’s financial and technical backing, noting that the team is working tirelessly to complete the project ahead of the UMC LAC 192nd Annual Conference (February 10–16, 2025) in Gbarnga, Bong County.
The new tower marks a milestone for the UMC’s Department of Communications, addressing longstanding technical challenges and securing ELUM Radio’s future. “This isn’t just about infrastructure—it’s about empowering voices and transforming lives,” Fth. Togba Sr. added. “We are poised to serve generations to come.”
