On August 10, 2024, the New Life Recovery Center in Marshall City, Margibi County, Liberia, held a momentous graduation ceremony for five at-risk youths who have successfully completed their recovery program. The event was marked by the theme: “Don’t Go Back to Drugs,” emphasizing a commitment to overcoming substance abuse and building a brighter future.
Jefferson Knight, Executive Director of the New Life Recovery Center, highlighted the urgent need for continued action against drug abuse in Liberia. Addressing attendees, Knight revealed a staggering statistic: “Approximately 300,000 youth are currently struggling with drug addiction across Liberia.” His remarks underscored the critical need for ongoing support and intervention to combat this pressing issue.
Knight also expressed profound gratitude to several key contributors who have supported the recovery center’s mission. He acknowledged the Liberia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, the Kakata Farmington River District Conference LAC/UMC, Tubman Memorial, and First UMC for their meaningful contributions. Their efforts have been instrumental in providing nourishment and support to the at-risk youth throughout their recovery journey.
Resident Bishop Samuel Jerome Quire, Jr., of the Liberia Episcopal Area of the United Methodist Church, also spoke at the ceremony. Bishop Quire expressed concern over the growing influence of drug lords in Liberia, highlighting the potential risks they pose to the future of the nation. He urged the Liberian government to intensify efforts in addressing the high rates of drug abuse among the youth, advocating for comprehensive strategies to tackle this critical challenge.
The graduation ceremony was a poignant moment as five youths—Elijah Wallace, Arthur Sackie, Augustine Simujla, Amandu, and Emmett Joe—received their certifications of completion. These young individuals have successfully met the center’s requirements, including testing negative for drugs, and have been joyfully reunited with their families. Their achievements serve as a testament to the transformative impact of the New Life Recovery Center’s programs and the power of community support.
The New Life Recovery Center remains dedicated to its mission of helping at-risk youth overcome addiction and reintegrate into society as productive, positive members. The ceremony was a powerful reminder of the importance of continued support and vigilance in the fight against drug abuse.
