In a move aimed at empowering Liberia’s future leaders, Bishop Samuel J. Quire Jr., President of the West Africa College of Bishops and Resident Bishop of the United Methodist Church of Liberia, has announced a scholarship initiative for young people within the church. The scholarships, which will cover Master’s and Doctoral degree programs, are part of a broader strategy for youth empowerment, institutional reform, growth, and reconciliation.

In a strongly worded statement, the Conference Women of the United Methodist Church of Liberia (UMC) has publicly distanced itself from a letter authored by Mothers Muriel V. Nelson, President and Ophelia J.S. Kennedy, Secretary General of the Conference United Methodist Women of the Liberia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church which levies serious allegations against Bishop Quire.

The Resident Bishop of the United Methodist Church/Liberia Annual Conference, Bishop Samuel J. Quire Jr has disclosed that disaffiliation with the church properties is not applicable and will not be allowed by those wanting to leave the church.
Bishop Quire statement follows several districts and churches’ attempts to disaffiliate, with some even withholding church properties in what they term as a protest against what they consider “evil and same-sex regionalization.”

he Liberia Annual Conference (LAC) of the United Methodist Church has reaffirmed its position on the definition of marriage, confirming that it remains between a man and a woman in accordance with biblical standards and national laws. The decision was made during the 192nd session of the LAC, which convened in Gbarnga, Central Liberia, from February 10-16, 2025.

His comments came during his episcopal address at the 192nd session of the Liberia Annual Conference held in Gbarnga on Thursday.
