Calls for Urgent Police Action

The Human Rights Monitor of the Liberia Annual Conference, The United Methodist Church unequivocally condemns the violent attack that occurred on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at the New Georgia UMC in the New Georgia Estate, Montserrado County, Liberia. During a peaceful worship service attended by members of the New Georgia United Methodist Church, Brother Alphonso Sieh and Moses Gborgar were assaulted by individuals claiming to be affiliated with the Global Methodist Church. These assailants, believed to be paid thugs, physically attacked the two men and falsely accused them of being gay.

This reprehensible act took place in the context of a recent Circuit Court ruling that overturned a lower court decision to close the church building, affirming that such a decision was beyond the magistrate court’s jurisdiction. Members of the United Methodist community had gathered for worship in accordance with the court’s ruling when the surrogates of the Global Methodist Church stormed the church facility, claiming that the court’s decision was in their favor and inciting violence.

We categorically denounce the actions of the Global Methodist Church and its affiliates, which have undermined peace, order, and religious freedom. Such actions are not only unlawful but also morally reprehensible. We call on the authorities to uphold justice and ensure the safety of all religious communities.

Furthermore, we call upon Mr. Gregory Coleman, the Inspector General of the Libraria National Police, to take immediate action in investigating this incident and arrest those responsible for inciting and executing this act of violence. It is imperative that those accountable are brought to justice to prevent future acts of intolerance and violence.

We stand in solidarity with all members of the United Methodist Church and reaffirm our commitment to peace, justice, and religious freedom for all.
