Jalingo, Nigeria – The United Methodist Church (UMC) Nigeria Episcopal Area, in collaboration with the Mission Districts of Senegal and Cameroon, is making history with the first-ever International and Historic Annual Conference Sessions. This significant gathering is being held at The United Methodist Church Negatavah, Jalingo, where four major conferences are convening simultaneously:
- 43rd Session of the Southern Nigeria Annual Conference
- 20th Session of the Northern Nigeria Annual Conference
- 19th Session of the Central Nigeria Annual Conference
- 8th Session of the Northeast Nigeria Annual Conference
This momentous event unites United Methodists from Nigeria, Senegal, and Cameroon, strengthening international ties and fostering deeper unity within the global denomination.
A Time of Renewal and Transformation
A central focus of the conference is the vote on the worldwide regionalization ratification, a crucial decision that will shape the future governance of the global UMC. This measure seeks to give different regions greater autonomy in decision-making while maintaining the unity of the worldwide church.
Another major highlight is the ordination of approximately 65 pastors, a milestone that marks a new chapter in leadership and service within the church. These newly ordained ministers will play a vital role in advancing the mission of the UMC across Nigeria and beyond.
Additionally, the conference will witness the installation of Bishop Ande Emmanuel as the new episcopal leader of the Nigeria Episcopal Area. His leadership is expected to bring renewed energy and vision for the church’s mission in the region.
A Display of Unity and Commitment
In a powerful demonstration of faith and solidarity, more than 5,000 people, including delegates, visitors, and well-wishers, participated in a three-hour road walk through Jalingo on March 20, 2025. This public march, held ahead of the official conference opening, showcased the unity and commitment of the church community in Nigeria and beyond.
Participants carried banners, sang hymns, and prayed together, affirming their dedication to the mission of The United Methodist Church. The event sent a strong message of hope, resilience, and faith to both the church and the broader society.
Special Guests and Global Representation
The official conference sessions, beginning on March 21, 2025, will feature distinguished guests, including international dignitaries and church leaders. Among them is Bishop Samuel Jerome Quire Jr., President of the West Africa College of Bishops and resident bishop of the Liberia Annual Conference. His presence underscores the deep connection between the UMC communities in West Africa and the broader international church.
This historic conference is expected to reinforce the unity of United Methodists across Africa, fostering new partnerships and strengthening the church’s mission in Nigeria, Senegal, and Cameroon. The discussions and decisions made during this session will have a lasting impact on the future of the UMC in the region and beyond.
As the Nigeria Episcopal Area embarks on this new chapter, the spirit of renewal, faith, and unity will continue to guide its journey in spreading the Gospel and serving communities with love and compassion.
